A MULTITUDE OF ECOLOGICAL CREDENTIALS
Oaks natural resistance to water, pests and rot gives it great longevity, which is why so many listed oak frame buildings still feature their original timbers. Oak is a responsible material to work with, as there are no dangerous byproducts and water consumption is minimal. Pre-treatment is simple and little machinery is involved. It has very low CO2.
Green oak offers plenty of practical advantages for homebuilders too. Many of its properties are not readily available in man-made materials - for example, its sound insulation qualities, and its ability to keep interiors at a constant temperature. Let's not forget oak's enduring beauty, especially the stunning silver patina that emerges as the wood grows old gracefully.
At Broad Axe, we make a point of only using oak from sustainably managed forests. A new tree is planted for every tree that is cut down.
